Another Reason I Love New England: Signs Like This

Unnerving...and charming

New England is one of the few places in the world where a sign like this is legit.  Not a joke.  And more than that, it’s one of the region’s many sources of charm.  If you’ve ever been lucky enough to see a moose in real life, you’ll know the quiet wonder…and the unnerving awe that fills you.

Moose are powerful giants, hulking around at about 1,800 pounds in weight, and 5 to 6.5 feet in height (at the shoulder).  Their antlers can even spread just as far, up to six feet in length. I saw one once clomp across Interstate-93 in New Hampshire, just north of the Meredith exit.  He was huge, yet seemed gentle–like a tender, mutant deer.  I had to remind myself he was real.

Tell me about your encounters with moose!  I’d love to hear about them in the comment section below.  Or tweet me @KPotterfield (click here or on the Twitter button on the bottom of this post).

If you live in another region of the world, what are some of the unnerving, charming “crossings” that make up your local landscape?  Javelina?  Crocodiles?  Let me know!
